T
hese are the woods of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and the white-tailed deer I've found within. For deer, they're fairly friendly, and mostly mind their own business as I clumsily stalk them. Along the way, I've found other creatures as well. Here are some of my favorites.
One rainy December afternoon, I headed out to the woods for a damp jaunt. Not 20 feet from the trailhead I turned a corner and saw a buck, ruddy grey, its antlers glistening in the mist. For half an hour I sat, poised, and the buck gazed back. Suddenly, he shook himself, and water flew from his antlers. I clicked the shutter, and, because of the evening's dim light, the photograph blurred the buck.
A butt?! I thought duncanpetrie.com was a family-friendly website!
A white-breasted nuthatch smells the cool March air.
A garter snake watches attentively for any signs of movement.
Ugh.
